Planning and research part 1...

I think the key to making a succesful music video is to know your audience. The typical person that listens to the reggae/dancehall genre is aged between 16-25 years.we know this due to the fact that other music video's in the market witch the same genre appeal to that age range.we also established that there is no specific nationality that listens to the raggae genre which makes the market for such a video alot broader.

while planning the music video we looked at a range of music videos to see what sort of conventions and themes are used. we looked at artists such as vybes kartel, movado and sean paul. what i found interesting in most of these videos was the lack of effects and the exsesive use of quick edits and quik camera movements to complement the fast paced music.we used youtube alot when reseaching the videos, it helped to give me an idea into what sort of shots would be needed as well as the angles.

after alot of thinking we came to the conclusion that we will have the video in black and white which certain parts of the misc on scene in colour, we believe this would be a very creative technique to use and would appeal to the audiance targeted.

Here are the links to a few of the videos we looked at:

The artist...

Princess landa is a up and coming reggae/dancehall artist from north west london.she has featured in many mixtapes which led to her having a large youtube following,we think that this music video will move her towards her goal of becoming an established signed artist.Eventhough the artist hasnt been around too long in the reggea seen she has already achived a significat following by the reggae listerners. The music video will promote her even more. The song that the video is going to be on will be 'No Time Fi Dem'

the first meeting....

During our first formal meeting as a group we realised that it was essential to immediately assign the roles required to make this music video a success.we allocated these roles based on personal attributes. we thought it would be suitable for the role of the editor to be given to nawed due to his experience in using the programs and being generally competent with software. The role of the producer was given to derryl and the directors role given to layla, and the role of the cameraman was given to me.we soon realised that the role of the director and the cameraman were closely linked as the creative aspects had to affect how the video was captured.Due to pilimainary reaserch before the formal meeting we detremined that the genre of our music video would be Reggae/Dance hall, therefore we focused on artists who were best suited for this genre.Derryl already knew such an artist personally by the name of princess Landa, an established artist who is well known around the local reggae scene in london. We saw that she has had many live performances as well as having thousands of hits on her youtube page.
this genre originated from jamaica hence it has a large following in the jamaican community.the general style of music has evolved with time as well as the elements of the lyrics.for example it has become more glamorised and the style of music videos seems to be influence by the music videos made by the rap/hip-hop genre.
My role as a cameraman means that i have to reaserch into appropriate camera angles used is previous videos from this genre and also look at how these shots will fit into the lyrics and the music.it is also essiential to time the shots perfectly and make sure there is enough footage so when editing there is room for errors such as continuity errors.
I looked at many music videos from the genre and heres a few that i found interesting and noticed the conventions of the videos and what type of shots and angles are common.

sean paul- watch dem roll

i noticed that the video genre of hip-hop and reggae/dancehall music was similar so this video was also worth looking at.

Ludacris ft niki minaj- my chik bad

i understand that some aspects of these videos are shot infront of a green screen and i also found the shots of the dancers interesting as we plan to have dancers in out video and i found that the shots of the dancers in both videos were very clever.
